Rehabilitation on the Pool

We aim to get patients into the pool as soon as their surgical wounds have closed. This helps patients get used to moving again, and also helps prevent any weight-gain which often follows post-op inactivity.

Pool rehabilitation is extremely advantageous as it allows patients to move without feeling the effects of gravity. This can aid in restoring gait pattern, range of motion and flexibility of the affected areas and allows us to introduce functional exercises at a very early stage. All of these factors dramatically increase the speed of a patient’s rehabilitation.

Our pools are heated for comfort and where possible we provide a hot tub to relieve muscle tension. It is not necessary to be able to swim to perform these exercises in the pool.

Rehabilitation in the Gym

Rehabilitation in the gym typically focuses on strength and endurance building exercises as well as the reduction of pain and inflammation during the early stages of rehabilitation.

We believe it is important to provide patients with a gym that has a lot of open space, this allows patients more comfort as well as giving us space to provide adjoined treatment rooms for ultrasound, or laser therapy for example. All of our gyms feature beds and other apparatus to facilitate the use of physical therapy, as well as aerobic and anaerobic exercise apparatus used to re-build strength and endurance.

Where possible, we aim to provide multiple gyms in our centres to allow patients in different phases of their recovery, or with different physical requirements to receive the optimal care. Each gym will have its own team of physiotherapists, although all of our physiotherapists are fully trained to take care of any and all types of patient.

A typical session in the gym will last between 90-120 minutes and will incorporate a mix of physical therapy, manual therapies and functional exercises.

Rehabilitation on the Field

Field rehabilitation is usually used in the final phases of a patient’s recovery and is performed on either indoor, or outdoor sports fields.

Performing rehabilitation exercises on the field is extremely important when recovering, or improving functional running and sporting movements like kicking a ball, or landing from a jump. These exercises are excellent when a patient wants to restore their level of fitness and avoid re-injury.

Rehabilitation on the field can be performed by all patients, regardless of age or sporting skill, as long as they can meet two key requirements:

  • Based on an isokinetic test, their injured limb must be more than 80% as strong as their healthy limb
  • They must be able to run on a treadmill at 8km/h (5mph) for ten minutes
