Lumbar vertebrae fracture

Fractures to the lower vertebrae can cause intense lumbar pain. These injuries are divided into two clinical categories – fractures without neurological involvement (stable fractures) and those with a neurological involvement (unstable fractures). The latter type is more complex as the nerves in the spine can be damaged if further injuries are sustained.

In both cases, patients will experience localised back pain, limited movement and changes to their posture. These injuries can lead to kyphosis or scoliosis in some cases.

X-Rays are usually sufficient for diagnosis, although CT or MRI scans may also be needed for further verification.

Stable fractures can be treated through physiotherapy in our specialist sports rehab gym where we aim to reduce patients’ pain and help them recover their full range of movement. In cases of unstable fractures, surgery is first required to stabilise the spine, however we are also well versed in post-operative rehabilitation here.
