Acute / post-traumatic lower back pain

Lower back pain can refer to a wide range of back injuries or conditions. However, we are proficient at treating all of them.

One common cause of acute back pain, can be a kind of ‘whiplash’ caused by a sudden, sharp straightening of the spine. It is important to check if there are any compressed nerves in these cases, which usually present in combination with severe stabbing pains around the nerve’s location. In most of these cases, sufferers will also feel muscular pain in the back as well leading to problems sleeping at night, which in turn can worsen their condition.

X-Rays are frequently used in diagnosing these injuries, although MRI or CT scans may also be used if your doctor suspects intervertebral disks may be involved.

We have a great deal of experience in treating these kinds of injury with physiotherapy, with sports massage and muscle toning exercises are particularly effective. Selective strengthening exercises and core strengthening are also very effective here in reinforcing the muscles required to support the back and reduce instability.

One thing which must not be overlooked when dealing with back pain and these ‘whiplash’ style injuries is the patient’s habits. How much time they spend sitting down and whether they have recently gained weight can be major factors in these cases.
