Iontophoresis involves using a current generator to pass drugs into the system in the form of ions.

The technique requires electrodes, coated in the appropriate drug, to be applied to the skin precisely where the inflammation is. The most commonly used drugs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids and/or calcium binding agents.

The patient may feel a mild stinging sensation during these procedures.
