This is a common problem and generally nothing to worry about. It is usually secondary to muscular contractions in the cervical and shoulder girdle area. It can occur in daily life as a result of sleeping awkwardly or prolonged posture changes such as using a computer for long periods. It is also often secondary to sport activities or car accidents.
Common symptoms include a stiff neck and a reduction in the range of motion (inability to turn the head fully). Sometimes there may be a structural or more serious cause and a doctor can help advice what treatment or investigation is required if any at all.
