We have recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, an original research study investigating the level of 2nd Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury risk in football. The study was completed with the Football Research Group, and analysed the data in the UEFA Elite Club Injury Study database.
The conclusions, were that
?18% of players suffered a 2nd ACL;
? Non-contact (x7) & isolated (x3) 1st ACL injury were important risk factors;
? If non-contact & isolated = 42% 2nd ACL
? Time to Return to Play was not an independent predictor of 2nd ACL
And sadly in the end, only 59% still playing at top level 5 years following ACL reconstruction.
This means that there is still work to do on secondary injury prevention and also focused on neuromuscular control
