  • Dr. Roi Giulio Sergio

    Born in Verona on October 14th, 1953. He lived in Padua until the age of 16, where he attended the Tito Livio secondary school, during this time Dr Roi was heavily involved with the scouts. Upon finishing secondary school, he moved to Milan and claimed the baccalaureate at the Giovanni Berchet College. He graduated in medicine and surgery and specialised in sports medicine at the University of Milan where he spent much of his time in the laboratories of the physiology research department as well as co-ordinating research on energy metabolism in muscles, Biomechanics and the functional evaluation of athletes.

    In the years following his graduation, Dr Roi collaborated with the CNR and the Carlo Besta Neurological Centre in Milan on projects studying metabolic muscular diseases and was made a fellow of the Association for Research in Neurology (ARIN).

    Subsequently, he was made a fellow of Sports Medicine at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan and appointed Director of the Centre for Sports Medicine within the St Mary of Castellanza nursing home.

    He taught at the Higher Institute of Physical Education in Lombardy as a Professor of Biomechanics between 1991 and 2001, Since 1996, he has been a professor for the advanced mountain medicine course at the University of Padova as well as the Biomechanics of Human Locomotion at the Faculty of Sports Science within the University of Mesina and Exercise and Functional Recovery at the University of Verona.

    The Sports Medicine curriculum recognises Dr Roi as an Ordinary Member of the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine and distinguishes the work he did between 1985 and 200 whilst collaborating on research projects with the Italian Fencing Federation, the Italian Winter Sports Federation, the Italian Water Skiing Federation, the Italian Ice Sports Federation and Italian Triathlon Federation.

    Dr Roi is also a founding member of the High-Altitude Sports Federation (now the Skyrunning Federation). As medical and scientific director for the federation, Dr Roi has taken part in many expeditions to Nepal (1992, 1995), Tibet (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998), the USA (1994, 1995, 1996, 1997) and Mexico (1996).

    In 2008 he took part in the preparation for an expedition to Broad Peak in Pakistan (8,047 meters) led by Giuseppe Pompili, accompanying climbers Sandra Canestri, Adriano Dal Cin and Marco Tosutti up to their Base Camp.

    Before being called to Bologna in 2001 by Dr Stefano Della Villa to head up Isokinetic’s Education and Research Department, where he was appointed the Scientific Director of the International Sports Medicine Rehabilitation and Traumatology Conference, Dr Roi spent over ten years in charge of Functional Evaluation at the Marathon Centre in Brescia, directed by Dr Gabriele Rosa.

    Throughout his career, Dr Roi has conducted research projects in applied physiology, energy metabolism, anthropometry, biomechanics, sports traumatology and sports rehabilitation, working with leading scientists such as Giuseppe Banfi (University of Milan), Carmelo Bosco (University of Rome), Carlo Cisari (Oriental University of Piemonte), Guido Ferretti (University of Geneva and Brescia), Bruno Grassi (University of Udine), Geroges Larivière (University of Montreal), Alberto Minetti (University of Milan), Piero Mognoni (CNR Milan), Marco Nostrils (University of Manchester), Franco Saibene (CNR Milan), Lynn Snyder-Mackler (University of Delaware), Luigi Tesio (University of Milan) and Mark Zaccaria (University of Padua).

    As well as his conference activities both in Italy and abroud, Dr Roi has written numerous scientific journals and publications as well as several books including Manual of Cardio Fitness, Isokinetic Exercises and 99 Abdominal Exercises.

    Dr Roi has a great deal of experience in functional assessment of athletes, as such he is responsible for evaluating the doctors at all of Isokinetic’s centres across Italy.

    He has also been involved in the preparation for many major sporting events such as:

    • The World Record 24-hour ice skating event (1993, Italian national team, 880.8 km)
    • The World Record timed ice skating (Roberto Sighel, Calgary, Canada, 1998)
    • The Aconcagua ascent records (Brunod, Meraldi, Pellissier, 1999, 5h57’)
    • Helped Roberto Baggio return to football after the reconstruction of his anterior cruciate ligament in just 77 days (May 2003)
    • Conquest of Mt Everest by the first Italian woman (Manuela di Centra, May 23rd 2003)
    • Ascent of K2 by the ‘Squirrels of Cortina d’Ampezzo’ (July 27th 2004)

    Outside of work, Dr Roi’s interests include classical music and opera, particularly Verdi, Wagner and Hoffenbach. In the past he practiced fencing to a competitive level. Currently Dr Roi has been enjoying sailing, as well as more adventurous activities like frozen lake skating, riding the Luge tracks and the occasional skiing trip when the weather permits it.
