Football is the most popular sport worldwide with more than 250 million players, coaches, and referees. The ever increasing number of active players is expected to result in more injuries, more loss of playing time, and more expenses for treatment* This demonstrates the need for an injury prevention programme.

    What is FIFA?

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is an association governed by Swiss law founded in 1904 and based in Zurich. It has 208 member associations and its goal, enshrined in its Statutes, is the constant improvement of football. FIFA employs some 280 people from over 30 nations.

    What is F-MARC?

The Medical Assessment and Research Centre (F-MARC) was instituted in 1994 by the FIFA Medical Committee to study the aetiology and epidemiology of football related injuries and physical complaints. The Chairman of F-MARC is Prof Jiri Dvorak MD. The philosophy of F-MARC differs from other groups: "while most sport scientists focus on improvement of performance, we decided to focus on injury prevention and promote football as a health enhancing leisure activity". F-MARC's main topics were: investigate the frequency and the causes of injuries, evaluate risk factors for injuries, and develop preventive programs. This global project required a core team of motivated, experienced researchers and experts covering the developing aspects of the programme. F-MARC conducts interdisciplinary research projects in cooperation with other international research groups.

The prevention programme was developed following recommendations from the scientific literature concerning risk factors and prevention of football injuries. The interventions were focused on the structure and content of the training by educating and supervising the coaches and players.

The prevention programme includes general interventions such as improvement of warm-up, regular cool-down, taping of unstable ankles, adequate rehabilitation, and promoting of the spirit of fair play as well as the specially designed "F-MARC 11". "F-MARC TT was developed to improve the stability of ankle and knee joints, the flexibility and strength of the trunk, hip, and leg muscles, as well as to improve coordination, reaction time, and endurance.
